![]() For example, if you look at a molecule of water, it is made up of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. Just as we look at the shapes of different LEGO™ pieces, rather than the plastic that makes them, today we are just going to look at protons, neutrons and electrons as the "LEGOs" of matter.ĭid you know that atoms have energy? Well, these tiny subatomic particles are constantly moving or vibrating and we cannot even tell. ![]() The things we see in our world (water, wood, metal, skin, teeth) are better understood and organized by using the number of protons, neutrons and electrons their atoms (and molecules) contain. It is difficult (if not impossible) to determine the physical properties of something based on the number or quarks and leptons it contains. Physicists have recently divided atoms into even smaller subatomic particles such as fermions (quarks, leptons, neutrinos, electrons) and bosons (gluons, photons, gravitrons). The three main ones are protons and neutrons, which are found in the nucleus or core of the atom, and electrons, which are found floating around in shells outside of the nucleus. Several subatomic particles make up an atom. Molecules can be broken down into atoms, but can the atom actually be broken down into smaller parts? Yes, it can. We will also learn how atoms come together to form molecules! We will learn about the parts of an atom, its structure, and learn how to determine the charge of an atom. In this activity, we are going to learn about the atom. These tiny building blocks of matter are called atoms and they make up everything we see around us, even ourselves. Have you ever wondered what everything around you is made of? Are things made up of tiny particles that we cannot see? Yes, they are. Students should have some knowledge of atoms as the basic building blocks of matter. We’ll just say that whoever wrote it knew their Scorpions pretty well (the feel isn’t too far from that of the earlier hit “Still Loving You”) and clearly belonged in rock’n’roll full-time. But the plot thickened in recent years, as a few researchers floated the idea that the song may have been written by someone in the CIA. 39: The Scorpions: Wind of ChangeĪn inspiring record in its time, this tune took an almost hymnlike approach to celebrate the rise of glasnost and the end of Cold War tensions. Still, this stands as one of Pat DiNizio’s most charming tunes, and they even got some Byrdsy 12-string into it. It was their biggest chart hit and might have been a bigger one if they hadn’t released a ballad during the height of the grunge era. 40: The Smithereens: Too Much PassionĪ nod to the 60s from a band of true believers, this was the Smithereens doing Motown complete with a string arrangement. But don’t forget that the Bangles had more than one singer, and the Peterson sisters’ harmony parts are the secret weapons here. Susanna Hoffs’ vocal is full of yearning on a song about wanting love to last forever while realizing that may be a dream. The Bangles managed to make a classic 80s power ballad without completely letting go of their love for 60s pop you can still hear hints of the Left Banke and the Mamas & The Papas between the lines. Boggles the mind that he would have considered throwing one this good away it’s a torch ballad with a heartfelt lyric and the graceful melodic turns of his usual band Genesis at their pop-era best.Ĭlick to load video 41: The Bangles: Eternal Flame The backstory on this is just too perfect to believe: Taylor Hackford needed a theme for his new film, and Phil Collins just happened to have a discarded song with the words “against all odds” in the lyric. With its unmistakable intro of pulsing staccato synths and vocal grandiosity, the Cutting Crew’s anguished ballad was more about succumbing to a regretful tryst with an ex, than a sweeping romance. 45: Cutting Crew: I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight If you put these all on a playlist, you’ve got the best two hours of slow dancing you’ll ever enjoy. He documented the patient’s level of aggression, how she responded to stimuli like food and light, and her general appearance. The doctor placed her under his direct observation to learn more about the particular patient and her condition. Qualitative observation example 1Ī mental health doctor noticed one of his patients who has a mental health condition exhibiting concerning behavior. Here are two qualitative observation examples to help you understand this research method better. What are qualitative observation examples? The interview is unstructured, so you can steer the discussion in whatever direction you like. In this method, the researcher asks the participants direct questions relating to the study. That is, you join the group without the other participants knowing that you are the researcher. In this case, the researcher becomes a natural part of a group to better understand the people or phenomenon under study. Researchers use this type of qualitative observation to identify trends or prove a hypothesis. In this method, the researcher examines the participants based on specific issues or contexts. Here, the researcher collects subjective data about an object, phenomenon, or process without the participants knowing they are under investigation. The main types of qualitative observation that researchers use include: Direct observation There are several methods of qualitative observation. What are the types of qualitative observation? So researchers using this method must always remember to give in-depth attention to each study. UniqueĮach research study under qualitative observation is different from the other. Researchers using the qualitative observation approach are expected to recognize their own biases when compiling their findings. Hence, there are no right or wrong answers. Also, participants provide answers to the researcher’s questions based on their discretion. It looks for characteristics and patterns to support the research hypothesis. ![]() Unlike quantitative methods of data collection, qualitative observation does not seek a definite answer. So the results of qualitative observation can vary from person to person, depending on their skills, education, and background. This approach solely depends on the observation of the researcher. You can only use this research method when the natural environment for observation exists. Qualitative observation is a research method that involves studying the participants in an environment native to them. There also is the possibility that new hypotheses and theories will emerge. ![]() The researcher establishes new questions as the study progresses. It is also not unusual for new hypotheses and theories to emerge during the research. Qualitative observation is inductive as the researcher is immersed in the research alongside the participants. What are the characteristics of qualitative observation?īelow are some of the characteristics of qualitative observation to help you differentiate it from other research methods. Qualitative observations are usually used by social scientists, sociologists, and psychologists to gain a more comprehensive understanding of human and animal behavior. ![]() This data collection method allows you to better understand the processes, culture, or people under study. Qualitative observation enables the researcher to observe, interact and gain a rich picture of participants in their natural environment. This approach does not involve quantitative measurement it only deals with data you can observe with your senses. It is a subjective method of gathering information as it depends on the researcher’s sensory organs. Qualitative observation is a research method in which researchers collect data using their five senses, sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing. What is the definition of qualitative observation? Since ions are charged particles, they can conduct an electrical current - that’s why they’re called electrolytes! For the most part, electrolytes include organic salts, some proteins, and both organic and inorganic acids and bases.Įlectrolytes have much greater osmotic power than nonelectrolytes because each electrolyte molecule disassociates into at least two ions. In contrast, electrolytes are chemical compounds that do disassociate into ions in water. Most nonelectrolytes are organic molecules - lipids, glucose, urea, creatinine, for example. Because of this, no electrically charged species are created when nonelectrolytes dissolve in water. Nonelectrolytes have bonds (usually covalent bonds) that prevent them from disassociating in a solution. It has been known that human plasma has a significantly longer shelf life than blood which is why it can be more sought after for those that need it as part of their treatment. In the image above, the ECF compartment is divisible in two compartments: (1) Plasma, the fluid portion of blood ( you may need to use this equipment to extract it from the other blood componants in a laboratory), and (2) interstitial fluid (IF), the fluid in the spaces between tissue cells. The ECF is the body’s internal environment and the cells external environment.Įxchange of gases, nutrients, water, and wastes between the three fluid compartments of the body. The remaining one-third of body water is outside cells, in the extracellular fluid compartment (ECF). The intracellular fluid is the fluid within the cells of the body. About two-thirds is in the intracellular fluid compartment (ICF). There are two main fluid compartments water occupies in the body. So, the more muscles one has, the higher the total body water % will be. ![]() In contrast, skeletal muscle contains 75% water. Adipose (fat) tissue is the least hydrated tissue in the body (20% hydrated), even bone contains more water than fat. ![]() This is because women typically have less skeletal muscle and more fat than males. The average young man is around 60% water, while a healthy young woman is about 50%. ![]() Total body water declines after infancy, and by the team one reaches old age, total body water is only about 45%. Infants, with their low bone mass and low body fat, are 73% water! Due to the high concentration of water, an infants skin appears “dewy” and soft. Factors which determine the overall water weight of a human being include sex, age, mass and body fat percentage. ![]() Developed and published back in 1993 by that time’s best game publisher, Wizards of the Cost, Magic The Gathering is still a favorite of over Twenty Million players worldwide. ![]() Magic: The Gathering is one of the most popular and played TCG (Trading Card Game).
